Jaadu, the lovable alien of Koi Mil Gaya isn't alone anymore. Sci-fi comes to India with a bang. Not in the shape of extra-terrestrials and supernatural beings, but more in the form of time travel and paranormal occurrences. After 13B, which serenaded a futuristic television set, the focus this week is on an equally empowered camera that captures the future in its sepia frames. The million-dollar invention falls into the hands of a down-and-out wild life photographer, Ray Acharya (Neil Nitin Mukesh) after its inventor -- the shutterbug's grandad -- dies. Not much of a legacy, laments the jobless bloke who's down to his last penny and doesn't have much to do, other than talk to the stray pigeons on his window or play voyeur to Simi (Bipasha Basu), the sexy DJ in the opposite apartment. In one such idle moment, he clicks her picture with the old camera while she's sashaying in her room, only to discover a photograph that shows her being shot in a bar. Time for Ray to jump into action and find a new focus to his going-nowhere life. He uses the camera, not only to save his girlfriend's life, but also to make millions by clicking lottery tickets and race horses to know their future. It doesn't take long for the greedy, gun-toting conmen to arrive at his doorstep, desperate to lay their hands on the magical camera. But that's the least of the lensman's problems. For he can escape the shooter (Rahul Dev) and the corrupt RAW agents in the bylanes of Bangkok, but how can he escape the camera's prediction of his all-black future. It's a smart new concept, a snazzy coupling between Neil and Bipasha and a thriller's edge that keeps Aa Dekhen Zara cruising along. The plot does tend to lose its grip in-between, but gets back on the rails before a crackling climax. Neil, who had already grabbed eyeballs in his debut venture, Johnny Gaddar, once again displays an easy charm and an effortless grace before the camera. He's roguish, yet vulnerable, all at the same time. Now that's a heady cocktail, indeed! And Bipasha too proves she's lucky with the boys...Remember her fundoo act with young Ranbir Kapoor in Bachna Ae Haseeno?

- Challenge surprises with its mix of style and substance

oves right? Well, it happens in the world of Challenge. You also have

reets of Dubai 

and dancing on the sand dunes.       

Challenge is certainly about style and attitude, as director Raj Chakraborty has claimed, but it’s also something more. For a change, you won’t find the characters howling, screaming or going hysteri

cal at crucial moments. You don’t find the goons dangling in the air after the hero has punched them. There are v

ery few ‘bizarre’ situations and the dialogues are quite life-like.

The plot of Challenge is not an original piece of work but the smart treatment does make it engaging. At the centre of the knotty affair is Rajatava, the baap of local goondas who is obsessed with the need to shield his daughter Subhashree from male gaze. Rajatava’s men bully every boy who dares look at her, but Cupid strikes when Dev-Subhashree meet and the hero takes on the father’s might with brain and brawn.

Despite the theme, which could have easily spiralled into the usual Tolly ordeal of sound and fury, Raj keeps the tenor breezy with music, humour and cute romance. Somak Mukherjee’s cinematography helps do the trick for Raj.

Challenge belongs to Dev. He does set hearts aflutter. He looks good, dances well and carries off the angry young man attitude with panache. And yes, he can act too. Subhashree, sweet and sassy, plays Miss Touch-me-not with poise but a little more effort would have helped her match up to her suave and spunky hero.

Rajatava looks a tad different from his other villainous roles as the story prevents him from going into the routine blood-and-gore nautanki. As the funny college principal, Kharaj is loud and theatrical but he fits into the scheme of things to make you laugh. Don’t miss little Aritra pulling out some gags in a cameo.

Jeet Gannguli’s music packs a punch, like the high-energy Bhajo Gouranga, where Dev tries to do an Akshay Kumar from Bhool Bhulaiyaa, crossing his fingers and singing Joy Sri Krishna Radha/ Bol Sri Krishna Radha… But the pick of the lot is the grungy title trackChallenge… nibi na shaala!

Aloo Chaat(2009) Movie Review

Hrishikesh Mukherjee started a trend. Simple stories narrated in the most simplistic manner. His movies inspired a generation of film-makers and a lot of storytellers even today pay homage to Hrishi-da through their movies. Robby Grewal does so with ALOO CHAAT. Only thing, the film lacks the sweetness associated that you expect from it.ALOO CHAAT makes you smile sporadically. At most times it's like watching a TV serial that's not hard to predict. 20 minutes into the film and you know what the culmination would be. Robby's last outing MP3: MERA PEHLA PEHLA PYAAR was an interesting experience, but ALOO CHAAT tries too hard to be a Hrishikesh Mukherjee kind of a film. Its execution brings back memories of the illustrious film-maker's several films as also Rajshri's DULHAN WAHI JO PIYA MAN BHAAYE [Prem Kishen, Rameshwari], but falls flat.

Verdict? This aloo chaat is spiceless!

What do you do when your entire family is against the bride of your choice? Do you replace your family? Or do you replace the bride? Nikhil [Aftab Shivdasani] hails from Delhi and is visiting his family in India. His parents start showing him Punjabi girls for wedding. Knowing the temperament of his father Purshottam [Kulbhushan Kharbanda], he feels hesitant to disclose about his love affair. Hence, he approaches his father's best friend [Manoj Pahwa], who has a great influence on his father. Together they plot to bring Nikhil's girlfriend [Aamna Sharif] into the family. ALOO CHAAT suffers due to one major reason: It just doesn't hold your attention. The screenplay [Divya Nidhi Sharma] relies on the same old tricks and the same old situations that we've watched over and over again. You do smile at times not because the scenes are funny, but because the dialogues are witty. Robby Grewal is letdown by a below-mediocre script. Music [Mehfuz Husain, RDB, Vipin Mishra] is soothing and a couple of melodies are tuneful. The video towards the end credits [RDB] is eye-catching. Dialogues are well penned. Both Aftab and Aamna are limited to a few expressions. Not their fault frankly because the writing hardly gives them scope to perform. It's the supporting cast that works wonders. Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Manoj Pahwa and Sanjay Mishra sparkle. Dolly Ahluwalia is okay. On the whole, ALOO CHAAT just doesn't work. Below average.

So much so, that it has moved up from its modest position of being just another 'house hold appliance' to actually determining the power equation in a family. It is easy to identify the hierarchy in the family depending on who controls the Remote Control. So what happens when the TV realizes this power and begins to take control. Dhoondte Reh Jaoge Movie Review - 

True. Dhoondte hi reh jaoge, for that side-splitting comedy that's supposed to give you paisa-vasool entertainment. Though, to be honest, if you still keep looking -- and manage to sit through the tedious first-half -- you might glean a few laughs in the second half, when the film actually tries to spoof all the successful Bollywood films from Sholay to Lagaan. 

Paresh Rawal is an unsuccessful film producer who is desperate to make a film and strike a comeback. He gets his chance when Kunal Khemu, a frustrated chartered accountant, decides to junk honesty for char-sau-bisi (fraud), because his behenji-type girlfriend (Soha Ali) is hell bent on settling down. Now behenji, being a fan of Biswajit and other Bengali actors, also dreams of being a big star herself. So her CA boyfriend wants to kill two birds with a stone. He wants to make Rs 100 crore by making a flop film and he wants to cure her of her Bollywood ambitions by casting her as the heroine who will never get a role after the dismal show. The devious duo also manage to rope in the reigning star, Sonu Sood and happily sound the clapper board for their dream venture. 

But hey, what's this. The premier show, which was supposed to be a tryst with tomatoes and eggs, turns out to be a heavily applauded affair, with the audience rolling in the aisles at this ungodly mix of Sholay, Gadar and Lagaan. Now that would have been okay, if you were applauding too. Ironically, you end up lamenting the great loss, for the film actually had a great potential and comes loaded with some fine actors. They all try hard but the juvenile script terribly lets them down.

13B Movie Review

13b Movie Review - 

Now this one's a neat little goosebump that keeps the chill factor on simmer, both in terms of content and charisma (read style). Generally, desi horror flicks end up low on story and crumble in the climax, relegating the suspense and gore to some mumbo-jumbo about witchcraft and voodoo. Rarely do they come up with some satisfactory explanation for all the paranormal bhoot lore on screen, before the closing reels. But that's not the case with 13B. 

On the one hand, it keeps the scare element brewing through most of the film, with danger and death lurking at every twisted turn. On the other, it blends the supra-normal with the normal, to give you a plausible reason for all the strange occurrences on screen. More importantly, it makes a topical dig on the 21st century global obsession: the all-pervasive -- and prying -- influence of television which seems to have completely taken over our lives. And if that's not a strong-enough statutory warning, the innocuous idiot box may soon be replaced by the inimical mobile as a sanity-threatening device, it concludes. Experts are already stating that 53 per cent of mobile phone users are suffering from nomophobia, (no mobile phobia) a fear of being without their mobile. So there! 

13B begins on a cheery note. A happy family, that happens to be a microcosm of the Great Indian Parivar, moves into a new flat that has been bought by the two brothers (Madhavan and co.) after incurring a hefty loan. The upwardly mobile brothers don't mind and begin their day on a joyous note, with the wives (Neetu Chandra and co.) merrily gossiping in the kitchen, the kids boisterously preparing for school and college and the mother (Poonam Dhillon) affably clamouring for a cable connection, since she cannot bear to miss a single episode of her saas-bahu soaps. Picture perfect, did you say? Well, almost. Just that the milk gets curdled every day, the portraits of the gods can't be hung on the impenetrable walls, the lift doesn't work only for Madhavan, his cell phone camera relentlessly distorts his face and the mysterious neighbour's dog simply refuses to enter the flat with his master. 

Reason enough for rationalist Madhavan to press the panic button? Not until he chances upon a television soap that seems to be playing only in his house and the onscreen drama ends up predicting the events that gradually begin to plague the happy family. Goes without saying, the soap is extremely popular with the women in his house, till the blood begins to flow....And the only way Madhavan can protect his family is by becoming a TV addict himself and learning what's in store. 

It's an interesting tale, told well, with all the mandatory twists and turns in all the right places. Adding to this, is the complete spontaneity of the ensemble cast, ably led by Madhavan who is extremely endearing as the yuppie, torn between the supernatural and the real. Watch out for some zippy cinematography, a stylised monochrome tint and some snazzy editing. Great timepass. Go for it.
